Pre Camino

Lourdes to St Jean Pied de Port
9 April

We woke to a wet dull morning at Lourdes with pilgrims by the hundreds making their way to the Sanctuaries of our Lady of Lourdes, all with raincoats and umbrellas, but it soon cleared to a beautiful bright morning. Our shuttle trip to St Jean Pied de Port was great, loved seeing the villages and farm settlements. As we entered the Basque country the buildings changed from muted browns to having terracotta-coloured tiled rooves, white walls with red or green doors and shutters.
It is amazing to finally be in St Jean Pied de Port after so long dreaming then planning on being here. After settling in to our accommodation we went out to explore the town. Such a beautiful village.
We've just had our first pilgrim meal: homemade vegetable soup, grilled chicken and fries, a slice of a Basque cake and a jug of rosé wine and were greeted with buen camino - here's hoping I do manage to walk it!
Today is ending as it started - in the rain.
