Valença do Minho

We spent today visiting the Fortaleza, the Fortress, once again. We explored more of the fortress itself and wandered through it many streets. So fascinating how the old Valença is housed within the fortress walls. We also went on the Valença 'train' - we can't not go on a train. It snaked it's way around the streets within the fortress then took us out and over the bridge back into Spain before returning.

Exploring the fortress:

A view across to the Tui Cathedral in Spain ...and the cannon below was lined up to make a direct hit if needed!

The cannon was dated 1778.

Somewhat older than the cannon is this Roman milestone below dated 42 AD. It was a milestone on the Braga to Astorga road and was moved to it's present site within the fortress in 1680.

A very small chapel within the fortress:

  1. I guess it made sense to have the town inside the fort...

    1. Yes it does make sense but it was a surprise to us yesterday as we thought it was old remains of a fort but it houses a very busy town still. The only invasions they have now are the shoppers. Today we saw large groups of women carrying massively full shopping bags. The Spanish come down to Valença to shop but there were groups from the UK there today as well from other European countries.
