Day 45

Sarria - rest day
25 May 2019

This morning was spent exploring the town plus getting a few things from the supermercado and farmacia. While we were out and about we were amazed to see an extremely large group of people walking off together, all dressed in smart clothes with small day packs, some with no bag at all, heading off on the pilgrim route. Are they part of a tour group, possibly walking for a while then bussing other parts? It will be interesting to see how busy our route will be from tomorrow on.

Santa Mariña Church

Main street of the old district of Sarria, the pilgrim district.

King Alfonso IX - king of Galicia and León, died 1230.

The lovely little 13th century Church of San Salvador

Pappy's house is hidden somewhere in all that greenery. It may be a bit dark, and very damp with lots of  slugs and snails, but judging by all the green growth Pappy should be able to have a good garden once he manages to get everything under control - and he has impressive entrance pillars.

The 13th century Monastery of Magdalena.

An old wall - one of many!

The small chapel of San Lázaro, all that remains of a hospital which treated people suffering from leprosy. The hospital closed in 1700.

The door detail.

  1. What craftsmanship all those buildings and doorways display. So much detail to look at.
I wish all these pilgrims of centuries ago had smart phones and we could find their photos somewhere up in the cloud.
What a great day you had exploring!

  2. Hope you both had a lovely relaxing free day in Sarria. I love the simplicity of the church of San Salvador. Pappy is going to have a hard time picking a house to renovate. Take care xx

  3. It was good to have a rest day but we always enjoy back on the path again. Yes Pappy has quite a job on his hands but messages from the girls tell me that most of the Pappy houses are too cute ...hence this one hidden away in the undergrowth with all the nasties that would come with it 😂😂😂
