Day 39

Cacabelos to Pereje - 15 kms
19 May 2019

We enjoyed our Sunday stroll today ...but every day is going to be a Sunday stroll in the sense that we're walking quite low kilometres from now on. Santiago de Compostela may be our destination but we're enjoying the journey so much that we are happy to move slowly. We feel we are so blessed to be here, walking the Camino, and can't imagine it ending.
It was only 3 degrees when we left Cacabelos but the sun rose and we enjoyed it's warmth even if it was still only 8 degrees when we stopped for our second breakfast at Villafranca del Bierzo where we sat on the sunny side of the plaza.
The first part of our walk took us through wine country - vineyards as far as we could see. From Villafranca del Bierzo we walked up through a gorge alongside the rio Valcarce with beautiful sounds of water at play all along the way. Pereje is a quaint old village, a lovely place to stop for the night.

Leaving Cacabelos

The canal went under the house

The cherry trees we passed by were laden with fruit. Other fruit trees have a long way to go until things ripen: plums, apples, pears, quince, figs and walnuts.

In the tiny settlement of Pieros

...and later Valtuille

The wild roses on the pathway are in full bloom

...still love the wild poppies.

Coming into Villafranca del Bierzo Iglesia de Santiago

This cat found a sunny spot

The 14th century castle, Castillo/Palacio de los Marqueses

Breakfast in Plaza Mayor

The beautiful municipal gardens

Looking through to Iglesia Colegiata

The peony plants and flowers were massive.

Walking out of Villafranca del Bierzo

Looking back to Villafranca del Bierzo

On the walk from Villafranca to Pereje we admired the neatly laid out vegetable gardens

Entering Pereje

...and in the village

The alter in the wee church in Pereje

The main street of Pereje - also the only street.

The hostel where we're staying tonight

This is Pappy's house on Pereje. He's got his  work cut out with this one but at least he won't run out of things to do and it even has artwork on it.

We went for a late afternoon explore along the river that runs parallel to the village...

    1. It certainly is productive. The home gardens are particularly impressive - so well laid out and weed free, even the biggest of blocks.

    1. Yes the countryside is bright and fresh and is very green and there's so much colour with the roses and potted colour. And yes again, things are old- so much history here.
