Day 30

León - rest day
10 May 2019

After being up early and out walking before sunrise since our last rest day in Pamplona our long planned sleep in for this morning didn't happen as we still woke early! We have had a lovely day though, we relaxed and wandered around central León and enjoyed every moment. León is an interesting city to spend time in.

We had a relaxing day exploring León

We had another look at Casa  Botines - designed by Gaudi

George slaying the dragon - above the doorway of Casa Botinesis

We also visited the Cathedral of Santa Maria de León

Léon cathedral was built in the 13th century - a period when it was realised that cathedrals didn't need the heavy stone reinforcements as previously thought hence it has nearly 1,800 square metres of stained glass windows

A sample of the figures on the cathedral walls

The 'train' in León - we enjoyed sitting back and being driven around as it was the first time we had been in a vehicle of any sort since leaving St Jean Pied de Port to start our Camino.

This is John from Northern Ireland. He has been one of our Camino family for the last few weeks, we've enjoyed his company. Just by chance he was in the Cathedral when we were there then also by chance he was on our train tour - John is planning to move on at a different pace so we said goodbye to him. Later we found a pizzeria for lunch and who should walk in after us but John!

This is Pappy's house. It's rather large and is in dire need of repairs but it's in central León so Pappy should be happy here

  3. So glad your feet got a break - of sorts. The cathedral looks amazing. Must have been a work of ages like the Gaudi edifices.

    1. The Cathedral is amazing. It was built when León had a population of just 5000 - how did they find it? Alsot was built in the 1200s - an era when it was realised that the heavy stone supports of the earlier cathedrals weren't needed, that it was more important where and how the supports were placed therefore more stained glass windows could be added - so there are so many magnificent windows in this cathedral.
